Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe." Thomas answered and said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed."  Jn 20:27-29

Have you thought? Those who have not seen.

Jesus says to Thomas, “You believe because you can see me. Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe.” That’s us! Jesus’ words in the gospel are meant for people like us living today. We are not in the position of Thomas and the other disciples who were able to see the risen Lord face to face and so convince themselves of his rising. The gospel recognizes that to believe in the resurrection without that physical, personal encounter with Jesus is to be celebrated even more. Happy are we—blessed are we—who have not seen and yet still believe!

Reflection Questions:

Saint of the Week: Francis of Paola - April 2

At the age of thirteen, Francis of Paola lived in a Franciscan friary and a year later, went on pilgrimage to Rome and Assisi. He returned home and lived as a hermit in a cave by the sea. Eventually Francis was joined by others and a chapel was built at the cave site. He built his new community around his one word motto: charity. He became famous for his prophecies and was said to be a miracle worker. In 1482 the Pope sent him to France, at the special request of King Louis XI who was dying and sought a cure. He spent his remaining years in France helping to bring peace between France and Spain.

This year, once again, we will celebrate First Communion at various regularly scheduled parish Masses during the Easter Season. We will celebrate First Communion at the 4:30 pm Mass on April 5 and 12, at the 11:30 am Mass on April 6 and the 9:30 am Mass on April 13.

Why celebrate First Communion during the Easter season? Since First Communion is about initiation, the Easter Season is an appropriate time to celebrate it as well as the other sacraments of initiation - Baptism and Confirmation. We will celebrate Baptism on March 30 and Confirmation on May 2 - all in the Easter Season. We will even have a Baptism at one of the First Communion Masses - 11:30 am on April 6. What a joyful time to celebrate these sacraments of initiation!

Why celebrate First Communion at regularly scheduled parish Masses? Why not have "separate" and "special" Masses for First Communion? The key to the answer lies in our belief that Baptism is a sacrament of initiation - initiation into the worshipping community of faith. Separate First Communion Masses and some of the customs surrounding them often give the impression that receiving Communion is a once-in-a-lifetime event like a baptism or a wedding. The children are being initiated into the ongoing sacramental life of the parish. It is important for the parish community to be part of the Eucharistic celebration during which the children will share for the first time at the Eucharistic table.

First Communion is a significant moment both for the children and for the whole parish community. It's a time for the whole gathered assembly to welcome these children to the table of the Lord. We do so with great joy! May the community's active presence and participation at the Eucharistic celebrations during which the children will share for the first time at the Eucharistic table cause all of us to reflect on the gift of the Eucharist in our own lives and in the life of our parish community

Sharing God's Gifts in love and justice;
Returning God's Gifts generously.
From Deacon Mike:

 In the midst of discussing our worship practices, I will occasionally be asked about the practice of mixing a small amount of water into the chalice containing wine – at the time of the presentation of the bread and wine for the liturgy of the Eucharist.

As we mix water with the wine, we say the following prayer quietly. “By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humanity.”
