They returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them who were saying, "The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!" Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread. - Lk 24:33-35

Living the Gospel – Living the journey

The story of the road to Emmaus is a perfect model for our Christian life. It reminds us first of all that none of us walk the journey alone. Even when we don’t recognize his presence, Jesus joins us in the everyday realities of life. The breaking open and interpretation of scripture is essential to making sense of our life experiences and through the celebration of Eucharist and table fellowship we are nourished to not only continue the journey but to share the good news with others. Where do you find yourself in the events of this story?

Reflection Questions:

Saint of the Week - John-Baptist de la Salle - April 7

Saint John-Baptist de la Salle was born of a noble family in 1651 and from a young age was destined for the church. He was ordained a priest in 1678 and with the help of a layman he opened two schools for poor boys and dedicated the remainder of his life to education. Some of his initiatives included the establishment of the first training college for teachers and the division of classrooms into separate grades. Through his work he founded the Order of the Brothers of the Christian Schools; today there are approximately 20,000 members of the "Christian Brothers". Because of John-Baptist de la Salle's pioneering efforts, he was declared the patron saint of all school teachers.

This year, once again, we will celebrate First Communion at various regularly scheduled parish Masses during the Easter Season. We will celebrate First Communion at the 4:30 pm Mass on April 5 and 12, at the 11:30 am Mass on April 6 and the 9:30 am Mass on April 13.

Why celebrate First Communion during the Easter season? Since First Communion is about initiation, the Easter Season is an appropriate time to celebrate it as well as the other sacraments of initiation - Baptism and Confirmation. We will celebrate Baptism on March 30 and Confirmation on May 2 - all in the Easter Season. We will even have a Baptism at one of the First Communion Masses - 11:30 am on April 6. What a joyful time to celebrate these sacraments of initiation!

Why celebrate First Communion at regularly scheduled parish Masses? Why not have "separate" and "special" Masses for First Communion? The key to the answer lies in our belief that Baptism is a sacrament of initiation - initiation into the worshipping community of faith. Separate First Communion Masses and some of the customs surrounding them often give the impression that receiving Communion is a once-in-a-lifetime event like a baptism or a wedding. The children are being initiated into the ongoing sacramental life of the parish. It is important for the parish community to be part of the Eucharistic celebration during which the children will share for the first time at the Eucharistic table.

First Communion is a significant moment both for the children and for the whole parish community. It's a time for the whole gathered assembly to welcome these children to the table of the Lord. We do so with great joy! May the community's active presence and participation at the Eucharistic celebrations during which the children will share for the first time at the Eucharistic table cause all of us to reflect on the gift of the Eucharist in our own lives and in the life of our parish community.

“Upon this rock I will build my church.”

Please join Steve Breed and Roger Bourassa for a wine & cheese social fundraiser hosted by Joe and Paddy Favazza on Sunday, April 13th from 6:00 – 9:00 pm.  As many of you know, Steve and Roger have been to Guatemala on two occasions to volunteer at Hogar Miguel Magone, a home for orphaned, abused, and abandoned boys (and now girls).  Every Sunday, the children of the orphanage are joined by dozens of other children from the surrounding village and their families to celebrate Mass and participate in religious education activities in a small, crowded room.  A new church is slowly being constructed at the orphanage, but is still unfinished.  In February, $2,200 was raised to lay conduit for electricity and pour a concrete floor.  An additional $5,000 is needed to complete the church.

Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution.  There are several ways to do so:  1) on-line through the Orphan’s Hope Project (www.orphanshopeproject.com); 2) a check made out to Orphan’s Hope Project and mailed to: Roger Bourassa, 475 South Main Street, Sharon; or 3) join Steve and Roger at the home of the Favazza’s (55 Cottage Street, across the street from the church) for wine and cheese with friends, and make a cash or check donation at that time.  Please do not hesitate to contact Roger with any questions at: 784-8710 or roger.bourassa@verizon.net

Church Unity & Cultural Diversity Celebration

On Saturday, May 3, 5:30 - 7:30 pm in O'Connell Hall, we will have a "Church Unity and Cultural Diversity Celebration." Please plan to bring a food to share (enough for 6-8 people) that represents your cultural and ethnic heritage. You are also welcome to share something else (music, dance, clothing, art) that represents your cultural and ethnic heritage. Please RSVP to olosparish@aol.com indicating how many people are coming and the food and anything else (music, dance, clothing, art) you plan to share.

From Deacon Mike:

In the midst of discussing our worship practices, I will occasionally be asked about the practice of mixing a small amount of water into the chalice containing wine – at the time of the presentation of the bread and wine for the liturgy of the Eucharist.

As we mix water with the wine, we say the following prayer quietly. “By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humanity.”

The Parish Pastoral Council recently welcomed four new members:  John Maslanka, Janet Gillen, Genie Sullivan and Steve Landry.  Today we feature Steve Landry.

Steve Landry and his wife, Gail, live in Canton with their Corgi, Toby.  For about eight years, Steve has been a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, attracted by the spiritual life of the community.  Steve has benefited from the many opportunities for spiritual growth offered at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish such as Sung Evening Prayer during Advent and Lent, Sunday morning Adult Education programs and other lectures and seminars.  Steve enjoys getting outdoors to study and identify native plants and observe all aspects of nature.  He is grateful for this opportunity to serve the parish.
